STARA Datasets

We make available datasets automatically compiled by STARA across three validation tasks: Congressionally Mandated Reports, Federal Criminal Statutes, and San Francisco City Commissions. While STARA demonstrates high accuracy across validation tasks, automated extraction may contain errors, including false positives and mis-extracted fields. Users should verify critical information against original statutory sources. For methodology and validation details, please refer to our research paper.

Congressionally Mandated Reports

10,954 reporting requirements identified in the U.S. Code

A comprehensive enumeration of all statutory provisions requiring federal agencies and other government entities to submit reports to Congress. STARA identified over 5,000 previously undocumented sections of the U.S. Code containing reporting requirements beyond the ~1,500 known sections maintained by the House Clerk. (Many sections contain multiple reporting requirements.)

Federal Criminal Statutes (Coming Soon)

1,983 criminal provisions identified in the U.S. Code

A catalog of federal criminal offenses, including detailed offense descriptions and penalty structures. This dataset represents the most comprehensive enumeration of federal crimes to date, identifying nearly 800 more provisions than the previous most thorough effort. Each entry includes extracted elements such as prohibited conduct, penalty ranges, and statutory citations, providing new insight into the scope and complexity of federal criminal law.

San Francisco City Commissions

144 commissions, boards, and advisory bodies identified in the San Francisco Municipal Code

An inventory of all governing and advisory bodies established by the City and County of San Francisco, compiled in partnership with the San Francisco City Attorney's office. This dataset addresses long-standing uncertainty about the exact number and scope of city commissions, providing essential information for municipal reform efforts. Each entry includes the commission's establishment provision, membership structure, and governing authority.
